Sign of the Times

Summer

Big Project.

The crew is in cruise mode, which means I don’t have the usual start-up and daily calls with questions or new crisis.

The building manager calls me.

Uh oh.

“Hey, uh, the rumor is a sign was damaged sometime between yesterday and today, and it’s in the area you are operating. Can you ask around and see if it was you guys?”

Well, I already know how this will go. I hate to sound like an old man shouting at a cloud, but these younger guys just cant own up to any mistake they ever make.

So I just tell him;

“Order the sign, we’ll cover it.’

How sad is it that even after pressing on integration, I couldn’t get a confession? It was obviously us, the forks on our skylift still had white paint on them. I just don’t understand why people can’t own up to their mistakes. I always did.

It’s a sign of the times. It’s sad and disappointing.  I hate it. I don’t like the feeling I cant trust my guys. I loathe it.
