Whoa, Too Deep.

A bit too far

Occasionally, I will have my service team take a core for me when they are out in the field on a property I haven’t visited yet.

This home was a very peculiar design. Built-in the ’50s by the current owner’s father. There is no traditional decking on this property. The structure is a tongue and groove wood fiber decking, with the safe consistency of wood fiber insulation. It’s really a marvel and one of the only buildings I have seen designed this way. The only one of its kind I have ever seen.

It is also the only of its kind by the veteran roofer of 45 years has ever seen, because when he cored it, he kept digging until he could get to what was assumed to be a wood deck.

One problem, there was no wood to be found.

Oops.

Do you know how hard it is to patch and blend something like this?

Fortunately, the homeowner was beyond understanding, and an absolute treasure to work with considering. We ended up doing her roof, and with some modification, using fleece back over the existing built-up roof. We gave her a discount as an apology and pulled a guy out of retirement to help patch and paint the area.

It worked out, but it was a very unique situation.
