Post Addition
One of the most interesting projects in my career thus far has been a project that was a large conveyor system suspended 60’ over an active railway, also in use by the facility.
Working closely with their safety director during the bid, we devised a strategy that was acceptable to both him and our safety director that involved working with a series of man lifts and anchors to safely roof the structure. Everything was going to plan. Spring was wrapping up, and we were three or four weeks out from starting the project.
Then the safety director changed.
No longer, was our system sufficient, not our set-up. Forget that it was by the book of OSHA, that wasn’t good enough anymore.
It goes without saying the new direction had massive additional costs, time, rental, and approval to do this work.
Being stupid roofers, we carried on. Battling every day trying to get this project done. In the end, we did complete it. We asked for additional funds to cover additional expenses.
To their credit, they balked initially but gave in to most of what we had asked for. Our ask was fairly minimal, just to cover our own costs, and in retrospect, we should have asked for more.
I’m not sure I will be bidding on a project there ever again.
I should have asked for much more.
Only in Roofing.
