Tales from my Father:
One of my favorite and insightful stories passed to me from my father, was the story of the church leak.
Every Sunday, a church would notice a small puddle of water behind the piano in the sanctuary. It never seemed to matter what the weather did, hard, soft, or frozen, each Sunday, the organist would arrive and see some spots on the floor.
Weeks went on. The service crews couldn’t find anything to attribute the leak to. It wasn’t a fire suppression system, it didn’t appear to be condensation. It had to be the roof.
Months went by, and the church started getting understandably upset. More attempts were made. Nothing. Being a church, it was uncommon for someone to be in the sanctuary during a storm. So, the contractor made plans to arrive during a storm. Then 2 storms. Then 3 storms. Nothing.
That Sunday, he got a call from the church. More water on the floor. But this time, it was an apology from the church.
It turns out a little boy was using the piano as a personal bathroom, almost every Sunday.
That water wasn’t water at all, and it certainly didn’t come from the roof.
A valuable lesson in leak detection. Sometimes, you gotta think outside the box.
